March Community Day

March 24 at 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

March Community Day – Sunday, March 24th, 2024, 1-4 pm, FREE

Join the Speed Art Museum in celebrating Holi Festival – an important and colorful Hindu Festival celebrating Spring. The Speed will be alive with activities for everyone to enjoy. Beautify the sidewalks around the Speed by drawing Rangoli-inspired designs in chalk with The University of Louisville Indian Student Associate. Step inside the museum to experience the first-ever Holi Festival color (paper) throwing, hear Hindu stories, and a variety of traditional Indian Dances! And more! These activities will be free as a part of our Community Day offerings.

Holi Context:

The night before Holi, Holika Dohan occurs in which people gather around a bonfire and toss anything that does not serve them into the fire. This act represents victory prevailing over evil, removal of the old and the arrival of new. This Hindu spring festival has multiple colors representing a variety of things: red symbolizes love and fertility, yellow is turmeric (a native powder to India and used in many South Asian cuisine), blue represents the Hindu God of Krishina – God of protection, compassion, and love, and finally green symbolizes new beginnings.
