“A classic tale is given new life with exquisite craftsmanship and a poignant story of rebellion.”—Rafael Motamayor, IndieWire
Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro reinvents the classic tale of the wooden marionette who is magically brought to life in order to mend the heart of a grieving woodcarver named Geppetto. This whimsical, stop-motion film directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson (Fantastic Mr. Fox) follows the mischievous and disobedient adventures of Pinocchio in his pursuit of a place in the world.
A passion project of more than a decade in works, del Toro sets the film in Fascist Italy of the 1930-1940s providing a reading of the classic tale that works on one level for adults and another for children. While the story has been frequently read as a morality tale encouraging obedience in children, del Toro interprets it as a story of imperfect fathers and sons. It celebrates disobedience to Fascists–a timely lesson.
With the voices of Gregory Mann, Ewan McGregor, David Bradly, Tilda Swinton, and Cate Blanchett. 2022, U.S/Mexico/France, DCP, in English, 117 minutes. Rated PG.
