6-6:45 PM | Author talk with Dr. Lee Alan Dugatkin, University of Louisville – Behind the Crimson Curtain: The Rise and Fall of Peale’s Museum

Book Description: Charles Willson Peale’s Philadelphia Museum – the first major museum in the United States—was an Enlightenment temple of sorts and a gem of the new republic.  Over time, Peale’s museum would grow exponentially, eventually taking residence in Independence Hall, one floor above where the Declaration of Independence was signed and right below where (what we now call) the Liberty Bell rang each day. Peale’s creation would bring into its orbit almost every scientific, political and celebrity persona of the day.

7-8 PM | Immersive Opera throughout galleries with composer Nathan Felix 

Synopsis: The Artificial Heart is a chamber opera by composer Nathan Felix that will premiere at the Speed Art Museum in November 2023. This satirical opera is inspired by Robert L. Tools who had the first fully self-contained artificial heart transplant in Louisville in 2001. The performance will take place in various areas of the Speed Art Museum as an immersive production.

8:15 -10 PM |  DJ SpringBreak, Grand Hall 

Every third Friday, the Museum will once again be open until 10 pm. Each After Hours event comes alive with an eclectic mix of music, performances, a cash bar + food available by Wiltshire at the Speed, and of course art!
