Contemporary Art from the South Asian Diaspora

FEBRUARY 28 – MAY 19, 2024

Location: Gallery 4, South Building
Curator: Tyler Blackwell

Presented in tandem with the major historical exhibitions The Throne, The Chase, and The Heart and Elephant in the Room, the Speed Art Museum is proud to mount a special installation of contemporary artworks that explore the vital, wide-ranging, and dynamic perspectives of the South Asian diaspora.

Featuring some of the world’s most prominent contemporary artists, including Anju Dodiya (Indian, born 1964), Suchitra Mattai (Guyanese American, born 1973), Ranu Mukherjee (American, born 1966), Jagdeep Raina (Canadian, born 1991), and Salman Toor (American, born Pakistan 1983), the installation highlights recent artworks as a means to experience some of the many perspectives that are deeply informed by the artists’ diverse relationships to the region. The objects in this installation investigate wide-ranging themes, including ideas and representations of aesthetic expression, gender, family, intergenerational relationships, religion, landscape, and notions of belonging or “home.”
