Family Portraits
This group portrait by Thomas Sully depicts the four daughters of Robert Walsh, a noted journalist and diplomat from Philadelphia, who himself had posed for the artist in 1814. According to the artist’s account book, he worked on this portrait of Elizabeth, Anna, Mary, and Isabella Walsh for two and a half months, between December 1834 and early March 1835.
