“Fun. Kinetic. As outsized as its subject’s personality.”—Bobby LePire, Film Threat
The unlikely story of design visionary Bruce Mau and his ever-optimistic push for massive change. From creating Coca Cola’s global sustainability platform to rethinking a 1000-year plan for Mecca, Mau has expanded the definition of design over the course of his career. As the film weaves in and out of Mau’s work, past and present, it examines his most important project yet: his own life.
Mau gained international recognition in 1995 for his work on the book S,M,L,XL which has become one of the most celebrated studies of design. His collaborations with Frank Gehry and Rem Koolhaas have brough him enormous success.
The film tells the story of his humble beginnings in Canada to his sharp rise to fame in the design space. A year with Mau will take us across the globe, from Beijing to New York City, to show that design is an agent of change and has the power to shape our world. We begin where we end–in the forest outside of Sudbury, Canada–and his biggest design project to date . . . his own life. 2021, Austria/U.S., DCP, 78 minutes. Recommended for 12+.
