With all three categories offered – Animated, Live Action and Documentary – this is your annual chance to predict the winners (and have the edge in your Oscar pool)! Conceived to be a cinematic study of contrasts, this film details the lives of several people living on the streets in West Coast cities. By weaving individual stories with aerial vistas, time-lapse photography, and evocative details of contemporary urban life, the film aims to start a national conversation of the alarming and ever-growing issues of people who do not have adequate or consistent shelter. 2021, U.S., DCP, 39 minutes.

The Queen of Basketball
Directed by Ben Proudfoot

Luisa “Lucy” Harris was one of the greatest living women’s basketball players.  Despite winning three national trophies, scoring the first basket in women’s Olympic basketball at the 1976 Olympics, and being drafted to the NBA, she had to fight for recognition. 2021, U.S., DCP, 22 minutes.

Three Songs for Benazir
Directed by Elizabeth Mirzaei and Gulistan Mirzaei

Shaista, a young man who is newly married to Benazir and living in a camp for displaced persons in Kabul, struggles to balance his dreams of being the first from his tribe to join the Afghan National Army with the responsibilities of starting a family. 2021, Afghanistan, DCP, in Pashtu and Dari with English subtitles, 22 minutes.

When We Were Bullies
Directed by Jay Rosenblatt

Affairs of the Art

Beast (Bestia)

Ingrid is working in the Chilean Intelligence Directorate (DINA) in 1975. Her relationship with her dog, her body, her fears and frustrations reveal a grim fracture in her mind and in an entire country. 2021, Chile, DCP, no dialogue, 15 minutes.

Boxballet
Directed by Anton Dyakov

On day, a delicate ballerina named Olya meet the rough, surly boxer Evgeny. The contrast between their world and their philosophies is so sharp that even the possibility of these two characters crossing paths seems incredible. 2021, Russia, DCP, no dialogue, 15 minutes.  This film will be included if the rights can be negotiated. In this stop-motion short film, a bird raised by mice begins to question where she belongs and sets off on a daring journey of self-discovery. 2021, U.K., DCP, 32 minutes.

The Windshield Wiper
Directed by Alberto Mielgo and Leo Sanchez

Inside a café while smoking an entire pack of cigarettes, a man poses the ambitious question, “What is Love?” A collection of vignettes and situation will lead the man to the desired conclusion. 2021, Spain/U.S., DCP, in English and Romanian with English subtitles, 14 minutes.

Ala Kachuu-Take and Run

A young Kyrgyz woman is kidnapped and forced to marry. This is a drama about the desire for freedom in the clutches of a tradition. 2020, Switzerland/Kyrgyzstan, DCP, in Kyrgyz, English, German, and French with English subtitles, 38 minutes.
