With a $50 million expansion planned through 2015, The Speed Art Museum is currently closed for construction. The new 60,000-square-foot North Building will help create one of the finest experiential art museums in the country and will double the overall square footage and nearly triple the gallery space from the existing wing. The expansion will create a state-of-the-art space for larger special exhibitions, new contemporary art galleries, a family education welcome center, indoor/outdoor café, museum shop, and a multifunctional pavilion for performances, lectures and entertaining. Additionally, the new Elizabeth P. and Frederick K. Cressman Art Park and public Piazza will be created for the display of sculpture that will engage University of Louisville students and faculty and museum visitors.
Speed About Town
Although the museum’s galleries and Art Sparks are closed to the public, we are dedicated to a continued program of outreach event in the community throughout the construction period. The staff has been working diligently to coordinate and collaborate with local organizations to hold enriching and engaging events for our members approximately once a month. Many of our events will take place at the Frazier History Museum in Louisville and thus it will become our “home away from home” over the next few years where we will be holding artist lectures, art exhibitions, and more. Speed Garage Parking
The Speed garage will be open during construction, conveniently located in an adjacent garage operated by Riverside Parking Systems. Parking is $1 per 1/2 hour / $7 maximum charge (Special rates may apply for events and evening parking).
