Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness Public Opening

collection of Americana art in the world featuring more than
200 paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, furniture, silver,
and ceramics from Yale University’s renowned collection
of 18th- and 19th-century American fine and decorative arts,
considered to be one of the finest American collections ever

of Otello, Jessica Cresseveur, an art history instructor at
JCTC, will discuss Othello in art and film, including the Speed’s
painting of the Moor by Cabanel. Dr. Julie Maykowski, Manager
of Education Programs at Kentucky Opera, will discuss the opera,
and the Opera’s Studio Artists will sing selections.

Gallery Talk- Daniel Krebs, from the Department
of History at the University of Louisville, in conjunction
with Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness: American
Art from the Yale University Art Gallery, will discuss John
Trumbull’s The Capture of the Hessians at Trenton. Dr.
Krebbs is currently working on a book about German auxiliaries
in American captivity between 1776 and 1783. Talk is free with
paid exhibition admission.

Hattie Bishop Speed Endowed Concert Series Louisville favorite,
Olga Kern returns. In 2001, at the Van Cliburn International
Piano Competition, this Russian pianist became the first woman
to be awarded a gold medal in over 30 years. Concerts are held
at the University of Louisville School of Music, Comstock Hall.
Pre-concert lectures are offered at 2 PM prior to each performance
in Bird Hall. Admission is $10, free to members.
