Yale Member Preview Day - Members, join us for a sneak peak at the Speed’s premier of the finest collections of American art in the world including special tours, light refreshments and a chance to win an exhibition inspired gift basket. Member admission is $7.

  • 1:00-3:00 PM Discovery Case in the Galleries Explore our galleries and try your hand at wrapping a mummy, finding mythological creatures, or creating your own scratch drawing masterpiece at one of our Family Stop Discovery Cases. With stops in either the English Panel Room, 17th Century Dutch or Egyptian Gallery there is always something new to learn. Admission is free.
SUNDAY, September 7

Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness Public Opening

12:00- 5:00 PM- Be the first in Louisville to view the most impressive collection of Americana art in the world featuring more than 200 paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, furniture, silver, and ceramics from Yale University’s renowned collection of 18th- and 19th-century American fine and decorative arts, considered to be one of the finest American collections ever created. Admission is $15, $7 to museum members.

  • 2:00 PM Curator Lecture:  Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness: American Art from the Yale University Art Gallery In conjunction with the exhibition opening, curator Helen A. Cooper, Holcombe T. Green Curator of American Paintings and Sculpture at the Yale University Art Gallery will discusses one of the most important collections of Americana in the world. Admission is free. (Auditorium)

  • 1:30 – 2:30 PM – Kentucky Opera Sights & Sounds: Otello In conjunction with the Kentucky Opera’s production of Otello, Jessica Cresseveur, an art history instructor at JCTC, will discuss Othello in art and film, including the Speed’s painting of the Moor by Cabanel. Dr. Julie Maykowski, Manager of Education Programs at Kentucky Opera, will discuss the opera, and the Opera’s Studio Artists will sing selections. Cosponsored by Kentucky Opera. Admission is free. THURSDAY, September 25
  • 6:00 PM- Exhibition Gallery Talk- Daniel Krebs, from the Department of History at the University of Louisville, in conjunction with Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness: American Art from the Yale University Art Gallery, will discuss John Trumbull’s The Capture of the Hessians at Trenton.  Dr. Krebbs is currently working on a book about German auxiliaries in American captivity between 1776 and 1783. Talk is free with paid exhibition admission.

  • 3:00 PM- Hattie Bishop Speed Endowed Concert Series Louisville favorite, Olga Kern returns. In 2001, at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, this Russian pianist became the first woman to be awarded a gold medal in over 30 years. Concerts are held at the University of Louisville School of Music, Comstock Hall. Pre-concert lectures are offered at 2 PM prior to each performance in Bird Hall. Admission is $10, free to members.
