Museum Wide Family Days

Saturday, October 25
Life and Liberty Art Family Day

This is a special occasion for families to explore the themes of the Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness: American Art from Yale University Art Gallery exhibition in unique ways. A wide variety of performances and activities will be spread throughout the museum. Program offered from 12 - 3 PM and admission is Free.

Join us for a performance of the Lexington Children's Theatre's Legends of Sleepy Hollow at 1 PM. Other activities will include gallery tours by Walden Theatre, family portraits and an embroidery workshop.

Saturday, December 27
Art in Motion Family Day


Experience art through motion as a part of this family event. A wide variety of performances and experiences will be spread throughout the museum. Program offered from 12 - 3 PM and admission is free.

Join us for a performance of the Kentucky Historical Society's The Flatboat Diary of John G. Stuart. Other activities will include gallery tours, dancing, preschool art and an animation workshop.

Art Sparks Family Studios

With a focus on engaging with the museum’s current exhibitions and exploring art techniques, Family Art Sparks Studios bring art alive through fun and unique activities. Typically offered the second and fourth Saturday year round from 12 - 3 PM. Admission is free with $5.00 admission to Art Sparks. Art Sparks Family Studios are offered through the generous support of: Yum! Brands, Norton Foundation, Louisville Metro Government, Community Foundation of Louisville, Kentucky Arts Council, Gilbert Foundation, Target and Members of The Speed Art Museum.

Wee One Wednesdays, Pre-school Art Series

Explore the museum’s collection from the viewpoint of a preschooler. Each session will focus on a trip into the museum galleries to see works of art and exploring ways of engaging with what is seen through art, music and movement.

Pre-school art classes will be offered in four week blocks beginning February 4, 2009. $30 for non-members and $20 for members.
Class limited to 12 children and one parent/caregiver per child.

Parent or caregiver participation required.

Summer Art Camps

The Speed Art Museum offers week long summer camps. Registration for the 2009 Summer Camp Season camps begin March 2, 2009.

Especially for Families Tours

Docents provide free, fun-filled tours designed especially for families with children. These tours are a great introduction to the museum and its collection.

Discovery Case in the Galleries

Touch, examine, and wonder at objects like those found in the collection. Discovery Case guides will lead you on a hands-on journey through a highlighted gallery. Discovery case activities are regularly scheduled.

Families First Gallery Guides

Take a self-guided tour of the museum with your family. Designed for families with children, Five Easy Pieces are filled with information about the museum’s collection. They contain facts, and activities that help parents explore artworks in the museum. The guides are available in the information racks around the museum or may be picked up at the main desk at the entrance to the museum. The gallery guides are free to visitors through the support of Salomon Smith-Barney Investments.
