Traveling Exhibitions

Though the museum is closed during our expansion and renovation, we are still committed to sharing our collection with members of our community throughout the region and beyond. Selections from the Speed's permanent collection can be seen in two traveling exhibitions at venues around the country. In addition to these wonderful exhibitions, the Speed tries to make its collections accessible to institutions in the commonwealth and elsewhere by contributing to a number exhibitions and temporary installations.

Rembrandt, Rubens, Gainsborough and the Golden Age of Painting in Europe from the Speed Art Museum, Louisville, Kentucky

Rembrandt, Rubens, Gainsborough and the Golden Age of Painting in Europe features 69 paintings, all of which represent the best of The Speed's especially fine collection of Old Master paintings. The collection is particularly strong in northern European and Flemish painting of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Highlights of the show include works by Rembrandt, Rubens, van Dyck, Teniers, Jordaens, Tournier, Ruisdael, Mignard, Crespi, de Troy, Largillière, Boucher, Batoni, Panini, Tiepolo, and Gainsborough. The exhibition has been extremely popular at its first six stops on the current tour schedule, with the cumulative attendance exceeding 117,000 visitors. See below for a list of venues for this exhibition. We hope you'll be able to visit these wonderful treasures from the collection before they make their way home to Louisville!

James McNeill Whistler: Lithographs from the Steven Block Collection at the Speed Art Museum

James McNeill Whistler: Lithographs from the Steven Block Collection at the Speed Art Museum

The Speed houses one of the nation's largest and most significant collections of lithographs by the American expatriate artist James McNeill Whistler. Comprised of 88 prints - nearly half of the artist's lithographic output - the collection represents the span of Whistler's career as a lithographer, from his early experiments in 1878 to the last works he produced before abandoning the medium in 1897. The collection is also complemented by a lithographic portrait of Whistler by his printer Thomas Way. The Speed is so pleased to share these prints with select institutions as a traveling exhibition during our expansion and renovation. See the short exhibition schedule below for information on where you can see these prints while our doors are closed.
